Wireface heads · full 3D

A whole head from one portrait.

Ears, neck, shoulders and hair, all the way round. Pick someone, turn them, make them smile, and leave them be: they settle, tilt, glance away and blink like a person sitting there.

Not a statue

A head that behaves like a person

Nobody sits still and stares at the camera. Leave a head alone and it settles into a posture, shifts to another, glances away and comes back. Switch Natural behaviour off above to see the difference.

Postures, not a sway

It holds a tilt or a turn of a few degrees for a moment, then eases to another, more often as it talks. It tilts a little further as it listens. Everyone has their own habitual lean.

Eyes that stay on you

However the head moves, the eyes stay on the viewer, as a person's do. Every few seconds they glance away and back, and the head follows a little.

Blinks that look real

Closing fast and opening slowly, at uneven gaps. Some are partial, some double, and they come with glances and shifts of the head.

Small expressions

A brow flash, one brow up, a half smile, lips pressed, an amused breath out of the nose, a nod. They come in quickly and fade slowly, the two sides never quite together.

Skin that creases

Smiles, frowns and raised brows fold the skin: laugh lines, forehead lines, crow's feet, with the skin rolling between them. Turn the wrinkles up or down under Dress and place them.

Talks with real lip sync

Press Talk: the mouth, jaw and cheeks follow the voice, phoneme by phoneme. It is the same animator as Wireface's face, so everything it does works on a head.

How a head is made

From a single portrait, all the way round

A portrait only shows the front. An AI image model draws the same person from the sides and the back; Wireface shapes a head to those views and keeps the face exactly as the photo has it.

  1. 1

    One portrait

The photo's landmarks map it onto Wireface's face, so the face is the photo.

  2. 2

    A turnaround

An image model draws front, both profiles and back. Each sheet is checked, and redrawn if it comes out wrong.

  3. 3

    A shaped head

The skull, jaw, neck and shoulders are stretched to the silhouettes, and a real ear model is fitted to each side.

  4. 4

    Painted and haired

The skin is painted from every view, and the hair is carved from them and grown as strands.

Under the skin

It is still Wireface's face

A head is Wireface's own face rig extended to a whole head, so nothing the face does is lost. These heads run live in your browser on the same engine as the face at the top of the home page.

What is in a head

  • 10,124 vertices: the face's 468 first, then the cranium, neck and body, and two ears.
  • One texture, painted all round, and hair as strands, not a painted-on cap.
  • The face's own animation: expressions, moods, gaze, blinks and lip sync.
  • Three looks: photo, sculpted and Wireface's glowing wireframe.
  • Tops and rooms: a T-shirt, V-neck, jumper, roll neck or shirt, and six rooms behind.
  • About a megabyte and a half for each head, loaded when you pick it.
